Universal goes old-school with VHS-style re-releases of 80s classics

The Universal VHS range is available to pre-order on HMV now.

Anyone else miss VHS cases? There was something reliably hefty about those plastic boxes that modern Blu-ray cases lack.

Universal and HMV are hoping you also miss video tapes, as they’ve teamed up to rerelease a range of iconic 80s movies in VHS-inspired packaging. From 30 July you’ll be able to pick up films like Top Gun, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, and The Breakfast Club in cool new packaging that’s roughly the same size and weight of a classic video tape.

There’s no VHS in the box, but you do get the film on Blu-ray and DVD in the box.

Each case has been lovingly designed using the original artwork from the 1980s to transport you back to a bygone era.

Also included in each release is a bubblegum-style card featuring a scene from the film, a sticker, and a mini movie poster.

That’s an incredible movie marathon right there.
John Carpenter’s classic chiller The Thing, VHS style.
This would make a great gift for collectors.

The first wave of this collectible range will be launching on 30 July with HMV.

The 12 titles in the first wave are 48 Hours, Airplane, Back To The Future, Beverly Hills Cop, Blues Brothers, E.T.: The Extra Terrestrial, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Scarface, The Thing, The Warriors, Top Gun, and The Breakfast Club.
