Unreleased Assassin’s Creed And Splinter Cell Movies Eyed For Sequels

Film adaptations of video game series have a famously troubled history, but production company New Regency is hopeful that two yet-to-be-released films will spawn big, money-spinning franchises.

Films based on ‘Assassin’s Creed’ and ‘Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell’ are being eyed for sequels, according to Daphne Yang, CEO the films’ co-financier Catchplay.

Speaking to Variety Yang said: “They are both adaptations of successful Ubisoft games and would make ideal sequels.”

‘Assassin’s Creed’ stars Michael Fassbender as Callum, who explores the memories of an ancestor (above, left) from 15th Century Spain to learn the skills of a master assassin.

Directed by Justin Kurzel, the film also stars Marion Cotillard, Jeremy Irons, is currently in post-production and will be released later this year.

‘Splinter Cell’ meanwhile isn’t even in production. The long-in-gestation project was first announced in 2012 with the casting of Tom Hardy as stealth operative Sam Fisher (above, right).

Doug Liman (‘The Bourne Identity’, ‘Edge of Tomorrow’) joined as director in 2014 and the film is currently slated for a tentative release in 2017.

There is clearly franchise potential the licenses. There have been nine ‘Assassin’s Creed’ games and six ‘Splinter Cell’ games on major consoles, plus many more spin-offs for mobile and handheld devices.

Whether or not sequels are warranted by either film’s critical or commercial success remains to be seen. We’ll at least find out in regard to ‘Assassin’s Creed’ when that’s released on 30 December 2016.
