So you’re just in WH Smith looking for something to read on the plane, and then this Bryan Cranston-based amazingness happens.

Filmmaker and video producer Kate de Ban was in this very situation when she saw a shifty gent writing in a book, before placing back on the shelf.

“A bit hunched over, leaning on a table display, he looked kind of familiar but under a baseball cap… and I thought ‘that’s cool, someone has recognised him and he’s signing a book for them,” she wrote in a Facebook post.

In fact, it was a cap-wearing Cranston leaving a lovely gift on the shelf for someone to find.

On the inside cover of his autobiography ‘A Life In Parts’, he’d written: “Thank you for checking out my book. I bought this copy for you. Seriously. It’s yours for free. Keep the receipt. Hope you enjoy the book and have a nice day.”

What. A. Gent.

Anyone questioning the veracity of the find should know that he’s admitted to hiding books in airports only this week.

He revealed to Sarah Brett and Nihal Arthanayake on BBC Radio Five Live’s Afternoon Edition that he does it every time he goes to an airport.

“Any airport I’m in, I sneak in, keep my head down, I buy the book and then I keep the receipt, and on the receipt I put a little ‘open me’. And on the inside I put ‘thank you for looking at this book, I’m proud of it, I hope you enjoy it, and this copy is yours for free’.

“And there’s the receipt so that they can prove they’re not stealing the book. Which would be a terrible joke on someone.”

Cranston has been in the UK for the past few days, appearing on Radio 1, amongst other things, where he rather gamely read out the lyrics to Little Mix’s ‘Shout Out To My Ex’.
