Vancouver Canucks captain Bo Horvat agreed with Sportsnet’s decision to dismiss hockey commentator Don Cherry over his racist rant during Saturday’s night broadcast.
Cherry hosted Coach’s Corner since 1986 but was let go by the network Monday after facing widespread backlash for his remarks.
While the 85-year-old unapologetically stood by his decision to criticize immigrants for not buying poppies ahead of Remembrance Day, Horvat is in favour of his firing.
“He’s been in the game for a long time but at the same time, hockey is supposed to bring people together and there’s no place for stuff like that,” Horvat said on Monday, according to Postmedia’s Ben Kuzma. “I think it’s the right decision. It’s upsetting hearing things like that being said.”
The 24-year-old also posted his support for the Canadian armed forces on Twitter, proving that it’s possible to support veterans and not espouse bigotry on a national platform.
