Newly-appointed Venom 2 director Andy Serkis has been drumming up anticipation for his Sony Marvel blockbuster.

Set to reprise his role as journalist-turned-alien-anti-hero Eddie Brock, Tom Hardy will once again lead the project, with Michelle Williams and (probably) Woody Harrelson joining him for the ride.

But with an already divided fanbase, how will Serkis approach the sequel?

"It's a fantastic franchise and I'm honoured to be asked to direct it," he told IGN at the Television Critics Association summer press tour. "It feels like a very contemporary story, and I think, hopefully, that it's going to be an extraordinary piece of cinema."

Naturally, he didn't disclose any solid information about the movie's plot, but did note that screenwriter Kelly Marcel was working on the script alongside Hardy's input.

"I can't tell you any ideas right now. I'm in the beginning stages, but I have some very clear ideas about what I want to see visually, and how we can take the characters to another dimension," he added.

Serkis also took some time to wax lyrical about his leading man, saying: "I've known Tom for years, and admired him as an actor and a producer. And we've wanted to work together for years."

Well, it looks like they'll get their wish, and then some, with the pair also collaborating on Steven Knight's A Christmas Carol mini-series this year.

Venom 2 is expected to arrive in October 2020.
