Venom: The Last Dance has debuted with a soft rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics deeming it inferior to its predecessor.

The superhero film, which is the third and final entry in the series, follows journalist Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) and his symbiote as they go on the run after being hunted by authorities from both the human and alien world.

In addition to Hardy, the stacked cast for the film includes Chiwetel Ejiofor, Stephen Graham, Juno Temple, Rhys Ifans, and Andy Serkis. Kelly Marcel, who penned the screenplays for the previous two instalments, is making her directorial debut with the film.

Ahead of its release in cinemas on Friday (October 25), the first reviews have come in from the critics, with its approval rating of 37% on Rotten Tomatoes bettering the 30% of the first film in the franchise.

It is, however, substantially lower than the mark of 57% that was achieved by the second instalment, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, though there is scope for the score to increase given that only 87 reviews have come in.

Digital Spy's review of Venom: The Last Dance has called it "the most entertaining outing of the trilogy", even if it's still "a fittingly mixed ending to this messy trilogy".

Slant Magazine

"As the film progresses, it consistently escalates the stakes and scale of its action, which doesn’t devolve into incomprehensible CG murk as it hurtles toward the climax."

Vanity Fair

"Venom: The Last Dance seems almost begging to solely be watched on airplanes, in the soporific 90 minutes between dinner service and uneasy, upright sleep. It functions best as an accidentally found object rather than something deliberately sought out."

Variety

"The Venom movies are a lark and nothing more, geared to the arrested pleasure centres of fanboys: the more snark and CGI the better."

The Guardian

"It’s quick and brash and seemingly aware of how goofy so much of it is but it’s also awkwardly overstuffed."

Hollywood Reporter

"This being the concluding chapter of a trilogy, it all leads to an emotional catharsis that will no doubt satisfy fans of the earlier movies, with a sweet touch of cheesy humour to offset the melancholy."

IndieWire

"At least the film ends with a fittingly poignant/ridiculous tribute to the greatest love story ever told about a man and his symbiotic alien goo."
