Village chiefs in Pakistan order ‘revenge rape’ of teenage girl over brother’s alleged assault

Police in Pakistan have arrested 20 people after they ordered the rape of a teenage girl in revenge for a rape her brother allegedly committed.

Village chiefs in Multan made the decision after they were told a 12-year-old girl was raped by her cousin.

Police official Alla Baksh said “A jirga [village council] had ordered the rape of a 16-year-old girl as punishment, as her brother had raped a 12-year-old.”

However, sources told the BBC that it was not a council that made the decision, but members of the two families.

The council apparently ordered the person who complained to rape the sister of the accused to punish him – which police say the man did.

According to Pakistan’s Dawn newspaper, the girl was forced to appear before the group and raped in front of them – and her parents.

The case only came to light when the mothers of the two girls filed complaints with the police and examinations found both girls had been raped.

Police officer Ahsan Younas told BBC Urdu that 25 people had been arrested but the man suspected of rape is still being sought.
