Vince Vaughn To Get Rough In Brawl In Cell Block 99

Are we seeing the beginnings of the Vaughnissance…? Anyone? Anyone? (You never know, it might catch on.)

After years of starring almost exclusively in such goofy comedies as ‘Dodgeball’ and ‘Wedding Crashers,’ it seems Vince Vaughn is determined to keep it serious for a while, as can be seen from his recent role in TV’s ‘True Detective’ and the upcoming Mel Gibson-directed World War II drama ‘Hacksaw Ridge.’

Now, Vaughn has signed on at the Cannes Film Festival to take the lead in ‘Brawl In Cell Block 99,’ which promises to be a gritty, fight-filled prison thriller.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film casts Vaughn as a struggling ex-boxer whose financial troubles lead him to crime; this lands him behind bars, where “his enemies force him to commit acts of violence that turn the place into a savage battleground.”

And it’s fair to assume things will get very savage indeed, as the writer-director behind ‘Brawl In Cell Block 99′ is S Craig Zahler, whose recent film ‘Bone Tomahawk’ (starring Kurt Russell) proved to be one of the most violent and bloody westerns ever made.

XYZ Films are producing the film, which is set to go before cameras late summer; no other cast members or release dates have been announced.
