An original comic featuring the first ever appearance of 'Superman' which was found being used as wall insulation has sold for $175,000 (£111,000).

The copy of Action Comics No. 1, published in 1938 and of which there are only thought to be 100 in existence, was discovered by building contractor David Gonzales.

He had found the comic in a cavity wall of a house he had bought in Minnesota and was renovating to sell.

Famously, comic book and superhero aficionado Nicolas Cage paid $2.1 million (£1.34 million) for a mint condition copy in 2011.

This copy, however, sold by online auction ComicConnect.com, was not in quite as impressive condition.

The front cover was torn after Gonzales got into an argument with his wife's aunt over the comic, which meant of the official 10-point grading of the book, it scored only 1.5.

Cage's scored a more solid 9.0.

The comic originally sold on newsstands for just 10c.
