Last month saw Rick Grimes shot in the chest.

The short version is, Rick successfully removed Pamela Milton from power after she had ordered her army to attack Rick's people – but it came with a tragic consequence, as Pamela's son Sebastian confronted him with a gun at night.

Issue 192 confirmed that, yes, this is the end for Rick. In fact, Sebastian shot him multiple times to make sure of it.

A shocked Carl Grimes found his father as a walker the next day and shot him in the head.

Sebastian was caught, and an upset Pamela told Carl that her son will spend the rest of his life behind bars. Carl visits Sebastian in his jail cell and threatens him.

Carl later breaks down on the road, as he and Rick's many friends make their way to bury Rick next to Andrea.

What this means for the TV show is unclear – especially with Andrew Lincoln exiting midway through season 9 and getting a spin-off movie. There is no indication yet as to whether the show will remix the scene with somebody else or heavily deviate from the source material.

(Of course, in the TV show, Carl is also dead.)

Rick's death in the comics had been previously hinted at by creator Robert Kirkman. In 2017, he said: "It could happen any time between now and 50 years from now."

Issue 192 marks the end of the fourth compendium.
