A New 'WandaVision' Fan Theory Says Dottie Is Really a Classic Marvel Character

For a film studio used to putting our nearly three-hour-long tentpoles, it's a bit of a miracle how much Marvel has been able to stuff into WandaVision's half-hour episodes. You have the whole mindbend-iness of WandaVision's meta-sitcom in the first place, those weird commercials, the show's place in the grand Marvel timeline, the whole beekeeper business, and Kathryn Hahn being Kathryn Hahn.

If that wasn't enough to keep up with for you, good news! We have another mystery to unpack. This one involves Dottie (Emma Caulfield), who's social royalty in WandaVision's town of Westfield. We meet Dottie in Episode Two, where she coordinates (dictates, really) the neighbourhood's big-deal talent show. She's set up as a bit of a meanie, snarking around and digging at Wanda Maximoff. Considering that Dottie's already set up as a villain of sorts, Marvel fans are speculating that she may be even more of a baddie than she already seems to be. You know, things more nefarious than criticising talent-show acts.

On Reddit, user Unknxwn fired up a thread wondering if Dottie might just be the the Marvel villain Mephisto in disguise. Mephisto, if you were wondering, is basically the comic-book devil, appearing in Silver Surfer as early as 1968, making a run in the Guardians of the Galaxy series, and even a live-action spot in the Nic Cage Ghost Rider flicks (RIP). The Reddit user thinks that Wanda cut a deal with Mephisto to live in WandaVision's strange alternate reality, so that she can be reunited with Vision, who died in Avengers: Infinity War. Here's the evidence Unknxwn came up with:

Agnes says to Wanda when walking to Dotties house - “Her roses bloom under the penalty of death”

Agnes then says - “Dottie is the key to everything to this town”

Agnes tells Wanda - “You get in with Dottie and it’ll be smooth sailing from here on out”

during the committee meeting Dottie says - “the devil’s in the details”

Even though "the devil's in the details" is extremely nudge nudge, wink wink, fans in another thread (avoid this one if you don't want to be spoiled), are speculating whether or not Dottie will turn out to be Clea instead. In the comics, Clea is the Sorceress Supreme of the Dark Dimension. If that nonsense title actually does make sense to you, it's because she's Doctor Strange's counterpart, ruling the land where Strange confronted Dormammu in his solo film. This possibility might make more sense than the Mephisto theory, since the upcoming Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will feature Wanda Maximoff. This makes it likely that WandaVision could act as a prequel to the big-screen film by introducing some of its characters, Cleo included.

If Dottie doesn't turn out to be Mephisto, though? Can I suggest another option? Let's get more Kathryn Hahn in the mix and make her the literal devil. I'm imagining she'd play it as a mix of Step Brothers's Alice and Parks and Recreation's Jennifer Barkley.
