WandaVision's Huge Episode Five Cameo Changes Everything About the MCU

From Esquire

WandaVision takes some huge leaps forward in its Eighties sitcom-themed fifth episode, leading up to a massive cameo that has major implications for the future of the MCU. The episode digs into Wanda's own grief, as SWORD begins to realise that she's manipulating reality to create her own perfect life with Vision after his death. Somehow, she's reanimated her synthetic, android husband to live with her in a sitcom world populated by kidnapped civilians who are under her control. Vision is starting to get what Wanda is doing, but before he can convince her to free him and the rest of the town, an unexpected visitor shows up: It's Wanda's brother, Pietro. But not the Pietro we've seen in Disney's MCU.

At this point we're going to need to go back a few years and a dozen movies to a different cinematic universe all together. Pietro, also known as Quicksilver, had his first major appearance in a modern superhero movie in 2014's X-Men: Days of Future Past. Now, in 2014, the X-Men property was then owned by 20th Century Fox, and this particular Marvel property did not overlap with the Marvel Cinematic Universe owned by Disney. In Days of Future Past, Pietro was played by Evan Peters, who reprised his role in X-Men: Apocalypse, Dark Phoenix and made a cameo in Deadpool 2. Okay, so that's the 20th Century Fox Pietro, because we've also seen a second Pietro in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Pietro first appeared in the MCU in a cameo role in the post credit scene of 2014's Captain America: The Winter Soldier, where Elizabeth Olsen's Wanda was first introduced with the character's brother Pietro, played there by Aaron Taylor-Johnson. The character returned in 2015's Avengers: Age of Ultron, where he died saving Hawkeye and a child. That was Pietro's final MCU appearance.

So now for a little business housekeeping. In March of 2019, Disney acquired 20th Century Fox in a $71.3 billion deal, which meant that X-Men could finally make an appearance in the MCU.

Though Marvel boss Kevin Feige has promised that the X-Men will eventually appear in the MCU, it hadn't happened – that is until Evan Peters showed up on Wanda and Vision's doorstep (which means some of the leaks and fan theories were true).

So, how did this happen and what does this mean?

It's too early to say, but what we do know is that the people in the MCU also noticed that Pietro is a different guy. When Peters shows up, Darcy, who's watching it from SWORD headquarters says: "She recast Pietro!?"

Yeah, it certainly looks like she did, but with the guy who played Pietro in a different cinematic universe, which appears to be unknown to people in the MCU.

This appears to imply that there is some sort of multiverse trickery going on here, which will ultimately be how X-Men make their way into the MCU. And, one would imagine that this is only the first of many strange superhero overlaps that we'll see going forward, with the upcoming Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and another Spider-Man film in which it's rumoured that we'll see some of the other Spider-Man actors.

In other words, shit's about to get real weird, and real confusing. Let's just all try to keep up.
