Acting legend “tears strips” off assistant director in this clip from An Unexpected Journey Extended Edition.

Sir Ian McKellen may be one of the world’s greatest actors, but even he sometimes found filming ‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’ a bit tricky.

In this exclusive behind-the-scenes clip from the ‘Extended Edition’ DVD, we see the Gandalf star face-off against assistant director Andy Serkis.

“He didn’t like receiving direction while the scene was going on,” said the Gollum actor. “There was one day where he tore me off a strip for doing that!”

A clearly annoyed McKellen said: “Just tell me what happens, then I’ll try and do it without you!”

Eventually the duo made up though. “If I’m not doing it right darling you must shout out!” said Sir Ian, before adding: “It’s the director and the people behind the camera who have been planning for this for months and years. When we come to film it, we just have to do what we’re told really.”
