Watch the moment Emma Stone realises La La Land didn't win Best Picture at the 2017 Oscars

It was the extraordinary scene that marked the 2017 Oscars ceremony, Emma Stone and the La La Land team were halfway through their victory speeches when it was noticed that the wrong film name had been read out and Moonlight was actually the winner.

The actress was on stage with her co-stars and the filmmakers as they accepted the top gong of the evening, before it became apparent the wrong movie had been read out by its presenters Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway.

The mix-up saw the musical's producers finishing off their acceptance speeches before La La Land producer Jordan Horowitz revealed the mistake, prompting a brief moment of panicked chaos on-stage.

Stone, who claimed the Academy Award for Best Actress for her part in the film, couldn't help but smile.

The stars and crew of La La Land shuffled off the stage and handed their gold statuettes to a jubilant Moonlight team.

Backstage, Stone said: "I was holding my best actress card the whole time so whatever story you heard, I don't know what happened, but I wanted to tell you that."

"When it happened I was just on such a buzzy stage, I was already on another planet. "I think it's a good outcome but a very strange happening for Oscar history."

"Is that the craziest Oscar moment of all time? Cool. We made history tonight. Craziest moment."

"I'm going to go out with a bunch of my friends and dance and drink champagne, that's my only plan. Its been surreal to play this woman. I've lived in LA for 13 years, I came here when I was 15 to audition. I knew what it felt like to go on audition after audition."

Clutching her Oscar she added: "I've been looking down at it like it was a newborn child, then I thought this is a naked man. Its creepy. How did that turn into a naked man story?"

Meanwhile, co-star Ryan Gosling struggled to contain his laughter as it came to light La La Land had mistakenly been given the best picture award instead of Moonlight.

In the midst of the confusion, Gosling held his hand up to his face in an attempt to hide his amused giggle.

Horowitz said: "There's a mistake. Moonlight, you guys won best picture.

"This is no joke. I'm afraid they read the wrong thing. This is not a joke, Moonlight, you won best picture."

Gosling, 36, appeared to be in good spirits despite the mishap and having earlier missed out on the leading actor prize to Manchester By The Sea's Casey Affleck.

La La Land won a total of six Oscars, including leading actress for Emma Stone and original song for City Of Stars.

The film's director Damien Chazelle became the youngest person to ever win the best director award.
