Before Gareth Edwards was thrust unto the Lucasphere, he had directed just two features – the micro-budget sci-fi ‘Monsters’, and then the mega-budget ‘Godzilla’.

And thanks to some of folk working on his latest movie, ‘Star Wars’ prequel ‘Rogue One’, there’s a nice little reference to his CV for fans to spot.

It takes the form of cave paintings in the basic dwelling of Forest Whitaker’s character Saw Gerrera.

“In Saw’s cave, there are some cave paintings,” he told The Star Wars Show on YouTube.

“One of them is of the creatures that were in my first film, Monsters. Then there’s some MUTOs (that’s Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organism) from Godzilla.

“I didn’t ask for it. They did it as a joke. I just came in one day and spotted it during the middle of a take.”

Something for eagle-eyed fans to look out for, there.

News of massive pre-sales figures emerged yesterday, looking in the region of 90 percent of the pre-sales accumulated by ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’.

It’s looking on track for an opening in the region of $130 million (around £100 million).

Telling the story of the rebels who stole the plans to the Death Star, it finds Felicity Jones’s Jyn Erso recruited to the Alliance to undertake the daring mission.

Also starring Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Mads Mikkelsen and Alan Tudyk, it lands in the UK on December 16.
