Wesley Snipes has explained why he doesn't view his role in Coming 2 America as a comedic role.

In the long-awaited comedy sequel, Snipes plays General Izzi, the older brother of Akeem's former intended bride Imani (Vanessa Bell Calloway), and he is looking to 'steal' command of Zamunda from the newly-crowned King Akeem (Eddie Murphy).

General Izzi is effectively the villain of Coming 2 America, but adopting his character's voice, Snipes explained to Digital Spy why everyone just really misunderstands General Izzi.

"He's a very serious man. He has just a mission and he uses his lightheartedness as a way of persuasion," he noted.

"He doesn't want to do any of that anymore, so he tries to be like a petal, like a flower, and those who don't understand that, he crush them. You didn't know this about General Izzi, people misunderstand him.

"He's a very nice man, he wants everything to be good for everyone... He doesn't want to own everything, he just wants to nationalise it, put his name on it so [they] can recognise who was the great mind that put it all together, that's not too much to ask for."

Coming 2 America brings back cast members like Eddie Murphy, Arsenio Hall and James Earl Jones from Coming to America, who join an all-star collection of newcomers including Snipes, Leslie Jones, KiKi Layne, Bella Murphy and Tracy Morgan.

Digital Spy also spoke to Morgan about the personal inspiration he drew from when it came to his role as Reem in the comedy sequel.

"I looked in the mirror and I felt Uncle Reem was in there. He derives from my uncle, my real uncle named Fatty Love. I loved Fatty Love because he loved me, he taught me a lot, he's my guardian," he noted.

Coming 2 America will be released on Prime Video on March 5, while Coming to America is available to watch now on Prime Video.
