Disney has unveiled the first look at the long-awaited film version of West Side Story.

One of the film's stars, ArianaDeBose, introduced the teaser during the Oscars on Sunday, as part of a Disney presentation that also featured Mary Poppins Returns star Lin-Manuel Miranda teasing his upcoming movie In The Heights. Questlove, the Oscars' musical director, also presented his upcoming documentary Summer of Soul.

This new version of West Side Story is being released 50 years after the original film musical, which itself was adapted from the Broadway production by Arthur Laurents, Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim.

This teaser, set to 'Somewhere', offers a glimpse of the rivalry between the Jets and Sharks, brought together through the unexpected circumstances of forbidden love.

Directed by legendary filmmaker Steven Spielberg, the new adaptation of the hit Broadway musical of the same name follows teenagers Tony (Baby Driver's Ansel Elgort) and Maria (Rachel Zegler) as they fall in love in New York City in the 1950s.

There's just one problem. Each of the youngsters have affiliations with rival street gangs – the Jets and the Sharks. (Yes, it is loosely based on Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet).

Billy Elliot: The Musical's David Alvarez and Dear Evan Hansen's Mike Faist are on board as Maria's brother and Sharks boss Bernardo and Tony's best friend and Jets leader Riff, respectively.
