Just like the seasons that have preceded it, the fourth outing of The Crown frequently takes us from place to place as we catch up with the ever-travelling Royal Family.

The series, naturally, has a lot of focus in London, but it also sees Prince Charles and Princess Diana head to Australia and New Zealand on a royal tour. Meanwhile, a grand total of eight royal residences around the UK are shown in the course of Season 4.

While the official homes of the real Royal Family weren't able to be accessed for shooting, production resorted to using many of the stately homes and country piles around the UK.

The Queen's favourite home features heavily in the second episode of the series 'The Balmoral Test' as the Royal Family stay at Balmoral Castle in Scotland.

The real estate, which is owned by the monarch, is located in Royal Deeside, Aberdeenshire and has been a residence for the famous family since 1852.

As the real property is off-limits, filming took place at Ardverikie Estate, Kinloch Laggan, Newtonmore, Inverness-shire, as well as at Knebworth House in Hertfordshire.

Buckingham Palace's opulent surroundings act as a cage for a lonely Princess Diana (Emma Corrin), despite their splendour, in the fourth series.

Multiple locations were utilised to bring the Queen's main residence to life, including Elstree Studios, Wrotham Park, Moor Park, Old Royal Naval College, Greenwich Peninsula, Wilton House, Goldsmiths Hall and Lancaster House.

Highgrove

At Princes Charles' (Josh O’Connor) pride and joy, Highgrove, we see his love of nature as he sets about renovating the gardens. His Gloucestershire home also conveniently puts him closer to Camilla Parker Bowles (Emerald Fennell) who lives nearby.

The real Camilla lived at Bolehyde Manor at the time with husband Andrew Parker Bowles, just 15 miles from the Highgrove estate where she now lives today with the Prince.

In the series, Somerley House in Hampshire doubles up for the impressive estate.

Kensington Palace

Kensington Palace becomes the residence of the Prince and Princess of Wales upon their marriage in 1981 and in The Crown, Harefield Grove, Brocket Hall and Wellington College are all used to replicate the London home.

It's where Diana raised her children in real life, and today it is occupied by a number of royals but most notably her eldest son, the Duke of Cambridge, and his family.

Clarence House

Clarence House was lived in by the Queen Mother from 1953 until 2002, but the scenes set there were filmed at High Canons, Borehamwood.

Nowadays, it is the London residence of Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall.

Gatcombe Park

The country residence of Princess Anne (Erin Doherty) is also glimpsed in the series, notably when the Queen visits her daughter for a frosty picnic at the Gloucestershire home, Gatcombe Park.

Wrotham Park in Hertfordshire replaces the Princess Royal’s home in The Crown.

Sandringham

Sandringham House, the private Norfolk residence of the royals, is Somerleyton Hall in the Netflix drama.

The estate is typically where the family celebrate Christmas, as they are seen doing in the programme.

The series also makes reference to how Princess Diana grew up close to the Royal Family as she was born on the Sandringham estate, spending her childhood in Park House.

Australia

While Princess Diana and Prince Charles head off on their tour of Australia and New Zealand, the cast and crew didn't actually have to go to the other side of the world.

Instead of shooting Down Under, Malaga in Spain was used as the backdrop to recreate the royal tour and the warmer climes of Australia.
