'Ignorant brainwashed child' or role model for climate change activism - who is Greta Thunberg?

She has been branded an “ignorant brainwashed child” by Jeremy Corbyn’s brother and a role model by others.

Schoolgirl climate activist Greta Thunberg is the poster girl for climate change activism.

She prompted the school strike against climate change last year and has gone on to be an outspoken voice on the issue.

The 16-year-old visited the Houses of Parliament where she told MPs that her future had been “stolen”.

She said: “We probably don’t even have a future any more. That future has been sold so that a small number of people can make unimaginable amounts of money.

“It was stolen from us every time you said ‘the sky is the limit’ and ‘you only live once’.”

Greta was branded an “ignorant brainwashed child” by Jeremy Corbyn’s brother Piers Corbyn, who said she was being manipulated by adults.

But his Labour leader brother met the activist at a roundtable with party leaders, tweeting an image of himself with her in front of a portrait of Tony Benn.

But who is Greta Thunberg?

In August 2018, the Swedish teenager stopped attending school in Stockholm and began a protest outside the Swedish Parliament to draw political attention to climate change.

The strike by the 16-year-old, who has been diagnosed with autism and ADHD, sparked similar action by pupils across the world.

Since then she has become a key figure in protests against climate change, speaking at various key events and being nominated to be considered for this year’s Nobel Peace Prize.

The teen was in the UK this week after travelling hundreds of miles by train to join climate change protests by Extinction Rebellion and was welcomed to the Houses of Parliament where she addressed MPs.

It recently emerged that Greta’s mother Malena Ernman starred in the Eurovision final ten years ago, leading to criticism by some that the 16-year-old is from a privileged background.
