Why Nick Fury Wasn’t In Captain America: Civil War

‘Captain America: Civil War’ included pretty much all of our favourite Marvel superheroes, while at the same time introducing us to some brand new ones who we’ve instantly fallen in love with, too.

But the man who brought everyone together in the first place – Nick Fury – was nowhere to be seen. And now screenwriter Christopher Marcus, who co-wrote ‘Civil War’ alongside Stephen McFeely, has explained exactly why Samuel L Jackson wasn’t needed for the blockbuster.

“Primarily it felt like one too many possible opinions,” Markus explained to the LA Times. “We didn’t want him to take one side or the other, because that’s not his place in the universe.”

Markus admitted that Nick Fury’s previous work with the government as the former director of S.H.I.E.L.D. also meant that his viewpoint would have only convoluted the already packed ‘Civil War’.

“We didn’t want another, ‘Is he still with the government? Is he opposed to the government but supporting the government?’ It got to be the potential for a lot more polemic discussion that the movie did not have room for.”

Markus also added that, as the parent figure and mentor to the Avengers, not including Nick Fury also meant that Iron Man and Captain America had no-one else to turn to and had to try and solve their differences without his “governing voice.”

But don’t fret over the character’s future, because even though Nick Fury wasn’t in ‘Captain America: Civil War’, Stephen McFeely admitted that he “would think” Fury would turn up in ‘Avengers: Infinity War’.

Which is unsurprising because at last count there were 67 Marvel characters in the blockbuster. So leaving Fury out of the fun again would just be mean.
