Why Pixar’s Inside Out Looks Different In Other Countries

Pixar’s huge success with their latest film, ‘Inside Out’, is down to the beautiful animation, the multi-layered story and appealing subtext that transcends to kids and adults alike, but they cleverly tweaked other elements to appeal to specific regions too.

It’s not the first time Pixar have done this. In ‘Toy Story 2’, Buzz’s’ ‘let’s save Woody’ speech had the American flag and ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ anthem removed in non-US territories. And Pixar have yet again gone to similar lengths here.

In a scene where a young Riley’s dad is feeding her in her high chair, there’s a distinct difference in the food he’s spoonfeeding.

During a recent interview with The Slate, co-director Pete Docter revealed the decisions to changes subtle things depending on the audience - notably US and Japanese ones.

“We learned that some of our content wouldn’t make sense in other countries,” he shared. “For example, in Japan, broccoli is not considered gross. Kids love it. So we asked them, ‘What’s gross to you?’ They said green bell peppers.”

There’s also another noticeable one (if you’ve seen more than one version), whereby the sports game that plays in her dad’s mind changes from football to hockey - presumably the former was used in most countries outside of the US.

“We offered a version with soccer instead of hockey since soccer is huge in so many parts of the world,” Docter revealed. “But some countries that are into soccer actually decided to stick with hockey since the characters in the movie are from Minnesota and it makes sense that they’d be hockey fans.”

‘Inside Out’ has already made over $600 million since its cinema release. It focuses on the inner, anthropomorphised emotions that control 11-year-old Riley’s thoughts, setting up HQ in her mind, consisting of Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust.

‘Inside Out’ is in UK cinemas now.
