Buckingham Palace has confirmed that no military uniforms will be worn by royals at the Duke of Edinburgh's ceremonial funeral this weekend.
Royal protocol dictates that royal family members are entitled to wear the ceremonial uniforms of their honorary military ranks at ceremonial funerals.
However, the subject became controversial when it was reported that Prince Andrew had wanted to wear his military uniform at the funeral - despite his decision to give up his royal role in 2019 over his former friendship with the convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
If Andrew had been permitted to wear his uniform, then the Duke of Sussex would have been the only senior male member of the royal family to be in civilian clothes, as Prince Harry had his honorary military titles removed when he stepped back from senior royal family duties last year.
This would have caused tension and questions of unequal treatment, as Prince Harry is a British Army veteran who saw active service on two tours of Afghanistan.
Prince Andrew and Prince Harry will now wear mourning dress at the funeral, as will Prince Charles, Prince Edward, and the Duke of Cambridge.
Prince Charles and Princess Anne will lead the royal family members in an eight minute-long procession, during which the coffin of the Duke of Edinburgh will be carried in a modified Range Rover from Windsor Castle to St George's Chapel.
Following behind Charles and Anne will be Prince Andrew and Prince Edward, followed by Prince William, Peter Phillips, son of Princess Anne, and Prince Harry.
The decision to keep them apart is believed to have been the Queen's, although the palace said it would not be drawn on any "perceptions of drama" that the public might conclude from Peter seemingly acting as a buffer between them.
There will only be 30 guests at the funeral due to Covid-19 restrictions.
The ceremonial funeral will take place at St George's Chapel in Windsor on Saturday, April 17th at 3pm.
