It looks as though ‘Wicked’ is finally getting its own movie.

According to the official Twitter account of Universal Pictures, the ‘Wicked’ musical is finally getting the movie adaptation we’ve all been waiting for… and will head to cinemas across the globe in December 2019.

“The musical phenomenon WICKED comes to the big screen,” their tweet reads. “In theaters 12.20.19.”

Of course, this is great news for ‘Wicked’ fans… and it’s been in the works for a long time.

Back in 2010, ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ director J.J. Abrams was reportedly in the running to helm the adaptation. But just a year later, it had somehow changed into a TV mini series. Another year later and director Stephen Daldry was apparently in talks to make the movie… and by 2015, producer Mark Platt was convinced they would have the movie in cinemas by the following year.

Of course, that never happened.

Thankfully, it looks as though Universal Pictures has gotten its act together… but for the time being, there’s no word on who will be directing the ‘Wicked’ adaptation.

Who will star in ‘Wicked’? For now, we’ll have to wait and see.

But having sung practically every number from the musical, perhaps the cast of ‘Glee’ are ready and waiting.

‘Wicked’ heads to cinemas on 20 December 2019.
