Will Smith gets an Orcward new partner in Bright

Netflix has unveiled a new look at Will Smith’s ‘Bright’.

And it might just be the perfect mashup on Dungeons and Detectives.

It’s no secret that ‘Bright’ is a bit out there. Starring Will Smith as a human cop with an orc partner, it’s one Netflix’s most ambitious upcoming movies… and it’s one of its most risky. But these new images of Will Smith suited up alongside an orctacular Joel Edgerton give us some idea how the weird, fantasy-based buddy cop movie is going to work.

And with David Ayer behind the camera, it might just be amazing.

“Today, the South Central Los Angeles Police Force announced that Nicolas Jakoby, the first ever Orc Police Officer, joined the department solidifying their commitment to diversity and their acceptance of all communities and races,” explains the accompanying LAPD bulletin. “Jakoby will be partnering with the esteemed Human Officer Scott Ward and providing much needed insight into the Orc community in the Los Angeles area.”

So, how did this strange partnership come about?

And why are there orcs in Los Angeles?

‘Bright’ is set in an alternative- present, where orcs, elves and fairies have been living alongside humans since the dawn of time. But while we see a fair few wands and wizards in the recent trailer, these new images bring the whole thing down to Earth.

It’s ‘End of Watch’ for the ‘Lord of the Rings’ generation.

And it sounds amazing.

“Ward, a human (Will Smith), and Jakoby, an orc (Joel Edgerton), embark on a routine night patrol that will alter the future of their world as they know it,” states the synopsis. “Battling both their own personal differences as well as an onslaught of enemies, they must work together to protect a young female elf and a thought-to-be-forgotten relic, which in the wrong hands could destroy everything.”

If you ask me, this is the most intriguing setup for an original movie we’ve seen for a long time. Whether or not it works is another matter entirely… but at the moment, it’s a perfectly crazy mash-up of two genres we might never think to put together.

And it the very least, it sounds like a lot of fun.
