The Witches 2 could happen after the new movie sets up a sequel
The Witches 2 might seem an unlikely prospect, but the new adaptation certainly sets up the possibility of a sequel.
Robert Zemeckis adapted Roald Dahl's book for the latest screen version of The Witches, this time with Anne Hathaway taking on the villainous main role of the Grand High Witch, determined to rid the world of children.

Does her evil plot go entirely to plan? We won't spoil it here just in case you haven't seen The Witches yet. However, there's a mid-credits scene that sets up the prospect of a return to the world.
To explain what a sequel could look like though, we will have to go into spoilers, so head this way if you haven't seen the movie yet.
The Witches ending explained: How does it set up The Witches 2?
To anyone who has read the book, it won't be a surprise to find out that the Grand High Witch's plan doesn't work.
After being turned into a mouse by the Grand High Witch, the unnamed boy and his Grandma work on a plan to put the witches' mouse potion into the soup that will be served as their starter at a meal.
The witches eat it and all turn into rats, except for the Grand High Witch who tracks down Grandma in her room, remembering her from years before when the Grand High Witch turned Grandma's friend into a chicken.
However, she's no match for the boy, Bruno and Daisy (who were both turned into mice by witches) and they manage to get the Grand High Witch to drink the potion. She turns into a rat and then they leave her for the witch's cat to deal with.
Using the address book for all of the witches in the world and the money found in the Grand High Witch's room, the boy and his Grandma resolve to turn all the witches in the world into rats.
In the mid-credits scene, it's revealed that Chris Rock's narration is actually the boy over a decade later when he's teaching a class of children to become witch hunters (as we see in the movie's opening scene).
The boy and his Grandma have turned all of the witches in the US to rats and now it's time for them to take down witches worldwide, using this newly-assembled army of witch hunters.
Dahl never wrote a sequel to The Witches, so if Zemeckis and co want to continue this world, then the next movie would tell an entirely original story that sees children take on witches worldwide.
There was also hope in the first movie that Grandma could come up with a potion to reverse the mouse potion. She's unsuccessful in the movie, but perhaps a decade of experience with the potion could see her create a fix in the sequel.
Right now, a sequel feels unlikely to happen, but if The Witches proves a hit with families this Halloween, you can't rule it out.
The Witches 2 cast: Who would be in The Witches 2?
Unless they wanted to go with an entirely new cast, you'd imagine Octavia Spencer would be back as Grandma, although Chris Rock would likely take over from Jahzir Kadeem Bruno in the role of the now grown-up boy-mouse.
We could also see Kristin Chenoweth return as the voice of Daisy, whose name was Mary as a human, before she was turned into a mouse, and the role of Bruno could be recast from Codie-Lei Eastick.
It's unlikely that Anne Hathaway would be back as the Grand High Witch as even though we don't see her death on-screen, it certainly sounded like the witch's cat killed her after she was transformed into a rat.
So the sequel has room for another star to take on the role of the Grand High Witch. After all, they'd need someone to lead the fightback against the witch hunters determined to turn them into rats.
The Witches 2 release date: When could we expect The Witches 2?
It's impossible to say when we could see a sequel released until it's confirmed by Warner Bros (if it even is confirmed at all).
The first movie skipped cinemas for a release on HBO Max in the US and as a Premium Video-on-Demand rental in the UK, so it'll be hard to gauge whether it was successful enough for a sequel unless Warner Bros release viewing figures.
Given everything that's affected movie production this year and the delays, it's unlikely a sequel could be filmed and ready for Halloween 2021, so you're probably looking at a 2022 release at the earliest if it gets confirmed.
The Witches 2 trailer: Any footage from The Witches 2?
Nothing as of yet since it hasn't even been confirmed, let alone filmed. Sorry about that. Take it up with the Grand High Witch.
The Witches is available to watch now on HBO Max in the US and will be available as a PVOD rental in the UK from Monday, October 26.
