'Woke up feeling so sad!' Kate Garraway marks first birthday since husband Derek's passing

Kate Garraway woke up feeling "sad" on her first birthday since her husband Derek Draper's passing.

The 'Good Morning Britain' presenter turned 57 this month, but admitted her initial thoughts on her birthday were of her late husband, who died in January aged 56 after being seriously ill ever since he contracted COVID-19 in the early days of the pandemic in 2020.

On Monday (06.05.24), Kate wrote on Instagram: "Well yesterday was another one of those sad 1st’s - my first birthday since Derek’s passing.

"Woke up feeling so sad and thought well I can either cry all day or celebrate life as he did so well.

"And thanks to wonderful friends it worked! (sic)"

Kate also shared a video on Instagram of her opening one of her presents, which contained some face balm.

She said: "Happy birthday to me! Thank you very much indeed, birthday treats. This is gorgeous."

Kate recently revealed she has been filming a secret TV project abroad, after she released her tear-jerking ‘Derek’s Story’ documentary.

Last month, the TV presenter said in a caption on her Instagram alongside a photograph of a bouquet of orchids she took while on board a flight: "Just landed back home after an amazing week filming - meeting some truly inspirational people (can reveal all in September.)"

She added about her bumpy journey: "Every flight that lands safely is a good flight by me! But this was exceptional.

"Despite storms internationally and delays the staff were calm and kind and managed to look as fresh as these flowers – even on landing.

"I am more resembling potpourri but feel great!!! (sic)"

'Kate Garraway: Derek’s Story' was shown in March as the final part of a trilogy of documentaries about her late political strategist and psychotherapist husband Derek’s battle with COVID.
