Woman charged over ex-boyfriend's death at Bedok Reservoir carpark

SINGAPORE — A 38-year-old woman was charged on Thursday (3 December) with culpable homicide not amounting to murder over the death of her 32-year-old ex-boyfriend.

Alverna Cher Sheue Pin is said to have caused the death of Wee Jun Xiang at Deck 4B of Block 145A Bedok Reservoir Road on 16 May this year between 1.44pm and 5.15pm. Her charge sheet states that she had intended to cause Wee’s death.

Cher, a Singaporean, is listed as the director of funeral services firm City Funeral Singapore, according to the Accounting and Corporate Regulatory Authority’s records.

Appearing via videolink at the State Courts on Thursday, Cher asked the court if she could make three phone calls: to her family, to a friend for help to hand money to her daughter and to ask a friend to find her a lawyer.

She said, “I am a single mum and the sole breadwinner and I need to pass money to my mother and daughter.” Cher added that she had two girls, aged six and 13, and that her mother had a stroke.

A police prosecutor applied to have Cher remanded for a week with permission to take her out for investigations. The District Judge granted the prosecution’s request and said that the investigating officer would help with the necessary welfare arrangements for Cher’s family.

Cher will return to court on 10 December.

In an earlier statement, the police said they were alerted to a case of an unnatural death at a multi-storey carpark on Bedok Reservoir Road. Wee was pronounced dead at the scene.

Cher, who was identified as Wee’s ex-girlfriend, was arrested for her suspected involvement in his death.

If convicted of culpable homicide not amounting to murder, Cher can be jailed for life, or jailed up to 20 years and fined. She cannot be caned as she is a woman.
