Hugh Grant has been cast as an Oompa Loompa in the upcoming prequel film Wonka, which stars Timothée Chalamet as the titular chocolatier.

The unexpected news was revealed to a select audience at CinemaCon in Las Vegas on Tuesday (April 25), where they were shown a trailer for the movie and given a first glimpse of Grant in the role.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the footage sees Chalamet's Willy Wonka discover Grant's "knee-high" Oompa Loompa trapped in a glass case, to which Wonka says: "You're the funny little man who's been following me."

"How dare you!" Grant's Oompa Loompa retorts. "I will have you know that I am a perfectly respectable size for an Oompa Loompa."

The footage shown to audiences also featured Grant's character singing a song to Wonka.

Chalamet then went on stage to talk about the film and his co-stars, saying: "Working with Hugh to begin with, what a dream come true. Also, as you guys saw there's Rowan Atkinson, Olivia Colman, and Keegan-Michael Key.

"It's just a dream as an American actor to be working with this dream of British actors, but that's the first time people saw Hugh as an Oompa Loompa, right? It was a trip and for those that [saw it]."

Wonka is scheduled to be released in cinemas on December 15, 2023.
