Work Starting On A New Saw Sequel

The rather definitive title of 2010’s ‘Saw: The Final Chapter’ shouldn’t be taken in the literal sense, it would seem.

News from big-hitting indie studio Lionsgate suggests that an eighth film in James Wan and Leigh Whannell’s series is now going ahead.

The new movie will reportedly be called 'Saw: Legacy’, and new writers have been appointed to get the script down on paper.

They are Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldfinger, the scribes behind recent horror offerings 'Piranha’ and 'Sorority Row’.

The last movie, 'Saw: The Final Chapter’, despite its title, did leave the possibility for future movies, potentially opening up a cult of Jigsaw followers.

As you will recall, Jigsaw was John Kramer (played by Tobin Bell), the puppet-master behind the bloody traps laid for those he deemed lacking in moral character.

The first movie, made in 2004, was produced for a tiny $1.2 million, but after being picked up by Lionsgate at the Sundance Film Festival, it went on to gross over $120 million, adjusting for inflation.

Following the success of the first movie, Lionsgate then made a 'Saw’ film every year, to coincide with Halloween, until 2010’s 'Saw 3D’, or 'Saw: The Final Chapter’ as it was also known.

The movies continued to make money, with 'Saw III’ peaking at $183 million, but things went downhill from there, though the final movie picked things up, making $138 million by the end of its run.

In all the movies made nearly $1 billion, but also suffered increasingly poor reviews – other than 'Saw VI’, which critics seemed to prefer, but was the movie which made the least money of the series, coining in $69 million.

Director James Wan, who created the series with Whannel, has since gone on to make movies including 'Insidious’, 'The Conjuring’, and 'Fast & Furious 7’.

He’s executive produce the new movie, alongside Whannel.
