'Wow!! Just wow': fans react to series 3 opener of 'Jamestown'

Friday night drama fans were left in tears tonight, as they sailed back to the New World, with the return of Sky One’s historical saga Jamestown – and all those watching categorically agreed that the opening episode was a corker!

It was all a bit of a rollercoaster of emotion, with both sobs of sadness and joy in equal measure. @Jenimeli simply Tweeted “Wow!! Just wow.” Adding, “Brilliant starting episode. Well done all.”

But there was disbelief and sadness too, when viewers realised that one of the drama’s leading actresses – Peaky Blinders‘ Sophie Rundle, who plays Alice in the show – was about to exit the drama. At least, for the time being.

Fans had already picked up on her absence in the promo posters. But they were still bereft when her fate was revealed.

While others were more emphatic. ‘Alice can NOT leave. no no no .”

The series originally started by following three very different women (Rundle, Naomi Battrick and Niamh Walsh), who arrive in New England in the early 17th Century, hoping to outrun their pasts and shape a new future for themselves. But the land and the people they discover there are not at all what they were originally led to believe.

Rundle will be next seen in Sally Wainwright’s brand new drama Gentleman Jack, which will broadcast on the BBC this May. It tells the true story of Anne Lister (played by Suranne Jones), a pioneering businesswoman and lesbian, who inspired people with her no-nonsense attitude. Rundle will play Ann Walker, the woman whom Lister fell in love with and married.
