Wreck-It Ralph tops US box office

Animated computer game film takes out Denzel Washington's latest too

New animated film 'Wreck-It Ralph' has topped the US box office, slamming competition from Denzel Washington's new film 'Flight'.

The hotly-anticipated flick has brought its studio Disney a record-breaking opening weekend, hauling in $49.1 million, as well as landing in the number one slot.

The feature stars John C. Reilly as a video game bad guy from a small-town arcade who decides he wants to becomes a good guy after 30 years of being mean.

It also features comedian Sarah Silverman, Jack McBrayer, Alan Tudyk, Dennis Haysbert and Glee's Jane Lynch among the voice cast, while characters from games past and present such as 'Sonic The Hedgehog', 'Q*Bert', 'Street Fighter' and 'Super Mario Bros' appear too.

Meanwhile, Robert Zemeckis's also heavily-tipped 'Flight', starring Denzel Washington as a flawed airline pilot who accidentally becomes a national hero, landed with a more modest $25 million.

'Wreck-It Ralph' arrives in the UK on February 15, 2013, while 'Flight' is out on February 1.
