Another time-honoured big screen hero is returning - but this time with a sci-fi twist.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jonás Cuarón - son of Oscar-winning director Alfonso Cuarón - has been hired by production companies Lantica Media and Sobini Films to write and direct ‘Z,’ a futuristic take on the pulp hero.

Jonás Cuarón previously co-wrote the script for his father’s Oscar winner ‘Gravity,’ and directed the upcoming ‘Desierto,’ starring Gael Garcia Bernal and Jeffrey Dean Morgan (pictured with the director below).

Lantica Media had previously been developing ‘Zorro Reborn,’ post-apocalyptic take on the character, but it is reported that Cuarón will be starting from scratch on his script, and that his take will have a ‘near future’ setting, as opposed to post-apocalyptic.

Created by pulp writer Johnston McCulley in 1919, Zorro - the alter ego of nobleman Don Diego de la Vega, who dons a black mask and brandishes a sword to protect the poor from injustice and corruption in Spanish colonial California - quickly became a movie icon thanks to the action-packed silent films of Douglas Fairbanks.

Many more screen incarnations of the character followed over the decades, surely the most famous being 1998′s ‘The Mask of Zorro’ and its 2005 sequel ‘The Legend of Zorro,’ which starred Antonio Banderas, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Anthony Hopkins, and were directed by Martin Campbell (’Goldeneye,’ ‘Casino Royale’).
