X-Men TV Show Almost In The Works

It looks as though an ‘X-Men’ live-action TV show could be heading our way after all… as 20th Century Fox closes in on a deal with Marvel.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the rumoured ‘X-Men’ series just got a little bit closer. But will Marvel part with the TV rights to everyone’s favourite mutants?

“We’re in negotiations with Marvel,” said Fox TV Group Chairman, Dana Walden. “We’re hopeful we’ll be able to announce something soon. We’re not closed on a deal yet but it’s something we’re definitely pursuing.”

Of course, a potential ‘X-Men’ TV series has been rumoured for some time, with ‘Star Trek Beyond’ writers Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne said to pen the highly ambitious project.

But while 20th Century Fox already owns the movie rights to the ‘X-Men’ – evident from the successful franchise starring Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellan – it seems the TV rights still have to be approved by Marvel.

“While conversations to bring the franchise to the small screen are underway, sources indicate a deal is far from complete, with Marvel — which owns the comic rights — still having to sign off on the deal. The comic book powerhouse is based at Disney, with ABC shows including Agents of SHIELD and Agent Carter on the network and five upcoming straight-to-series programs in the works there. Marvel would have to sign off on the deal.”

But can Fox convince them to sign on the dotted line?

It’s obvious that there’s more than a little rivalry between the studios – after all, they’re both now in the comic book movie business, often in direct competition with each other.

And then there’s Marvel’s recent TV offerings.

The comic book giants may not have the rights to the big-screen ‘X-Men’, but will they really relinquish TV control to a rival studio quite so easily? There’s already been speculation that it may involve a trade – the film rights to ‘Fantastic Four’ in exchange for TV rights to the ‘X-Men’.

But I can’t help thinking that’s little more than wishful thinking by fans who aren’t so fussed on the new ‘Fantastic Four’ movie.

What will the deal actually involve? For now, we’ll have to wait and see. But an ‘X-Men’ TV series is something we definitely want to see.
