Yellowjackets star Melanie Lynskey lands next lead movie role

Yellowjackets star Melanie Lynskey is heading to the big screen in writer-director Andrew Niccol's I, Object.

The movie includes both live-action scenes and animation, and will also star The Boys' Karl Urban, Avatar: The Way of Water's Jemaine Clement and Thomasin McKenzie from Last Night in Soho, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Set to begin filming later in the year, I, Object follows 10-year-old Tom, who's both grieving the loss of his father and struggling to relate to the people around him.

Tom seeks comfort through everyday household objects such as can lids and suitcases. These objects "reveal their true faces" and talk to Tom, helping him along the path of healing.

Niccol was also recently announced to be making a sequel to his 2005 movie Lord of War.

"I, Object is a unique and heartwarming story about the power of imagination and the importance of finding hope in the darkest of times," said Nat McCormick from The Exchange, which is currently introducing the movie to potential buyers at the Cannes Film Festival.

"By exploring big topics like grief and mental health from a child's perspective, this film is sure to resonate with audiences of all ages."

Lynskey recently played down reports that her character from The Last of Us, uncompromising resistance leader Kathleen, could appear in a spin-off.

"A sweet person on a press line asked would I do an origin story for [Kathleen], and what am I going to do, say no?" Lynskey explained on Twitter.

"I said sure of course! I'd do anything [show creator] Craig Mazin asked me to do, is the answer. I certainly didn't 'pitch' this idea how mortifying."
