Scream's Jasmin Savoy Brown says it's "very cool" to be playing the horror franchise's first openly queer character in the upcoming fifth instalment.

In the long-awaited slasher movie, the actor – who is currently starring in the Showtime hit Yellowjackets – portrays Mindy Meeks-Martin. The niece of Randy Meeks, Sidney Prescott's friend who appeared in the 1996 original and its sequel, before getting offed by masked murderer Ghostface, she's a self-proclaimed scary movie buff just like her late uncle.

She's just one of many mysterious fresh faces set to appear alongside returning faves Neve Campbell's Sidney, Courteney Cox's Gale Weathers and David Arquette's Dewey Riley in the latest outing. And with directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett determined to keep major plot points under wraps, fans have been forced to comb over promo material to pick up on hints about the newbies.

When individual character posters were released, people were quick to flag that Mindy was sporting what seemed to be an LGBTQ+ pride pin, which lead to speculation surrounding her sexuality. Since then, Savoy Brown has since confirmed that the theories were spot on and Mindy is gay in the blood-soaked flick, and talked about what a big deal it was for her personally.

"It's very cool, and any time I get to do any gay representation, it's very exciting," she told Digital Spy recently, as she opened up about the film's "true diversity" onscreen. "I thought: how lovely that I get to celebrate every piece of my identity, you know, as a woman of colour.

"I have my lesbo haircut, as I was told, in the film. It's quite funny, because it is quite a gay haircut, and that's the most important thing, to show off the different hairstyles that us homosexuals enjoy."
