Zac Efron's New Film We Are Your Friends Is A Record-Breaking FLOP

Zac Efron’s new movie ‘We Are Your Friends’ wasn’t all that likely to break any records, but it now has at least one under its belt.

It’s become the worst performing movie of all time for a major studio opening on 2000 or more screens.

It made just shy of $1.8 million over 2333 theatres in the US – equating to little more than $700 per screen.

The figure is made all the more painful thanks to the box office predictions that put its debut more along the lines of $8 million.

“This was a passion project for Zac Efron, and we believe in him,” said Jeff Goldstein, Warner Bros. executive vice president for domestic distribution of the bomb.

“Yes, the result was disappointing, but this was a small film.”

The movie, which cost $6 million to make, stars Zac Efron as a wannabe DJ alongside Wes Bentley and Emily Ratajkowski, and is directed by Max Joseph, best-known for his work on the MTV show 'Catfish’.

It has been roundly damned by critics, earning a lowly 43% on reviews aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes.

But perhaps more notably, it was shunned by the electronic music media, which made a point of not getting behind it.

YourEDM.com accused it of 'killing its own credibility’, while Mixmag said that ’[it] made us laugh out loud for all the wrong reasons’.
