Zach Galifianakis: I Wish We'd Just Done One Hangover Movie

In remarks that echo the views of movie lovers everywhere, Zach Galifianakis has said that perhaps they went a bit overboard on the ‘Hangover’ movies.

The star, who played the maladjusted Alan Garner in the original movie in 2009, and then its consequent sequels in 2011 and 2013, made the comments while appearing on Marc Maron’s WTF podcast.

“Look, that was a good chunk of my life that I do not regret at all but I wished we had just done one,” he admitted.

“I think leave well enough alone sometimes.”

However, he then went on to joke: “We’re contracted up to 12. I feel a real appetite out there for more.

“I mean, in 10 years when all this dries up I’m sure I’ll be knocking on people’s doors, ‘Hey, I got this idea… look, I’m still weird!’”

Indeed, the 'Hangover’ movies, in which he starred alongside Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Ken Jeong and Justin Bartha, upheld the law of diminishing returns in terms of entertainment, though – and this is perhaps key – not necessarily economically.

The first movie, which saw a Vegas bachelor party go spectacularly awry, cost $35 million (£24.5 million) for director Todd Phillips to make, but made Warner Bros back a whopping $467.5 million (£327 million) worldwide.

The inevitable second movie, which transplanted much the same story to Thailand, brought in even more, with a haul of $586.6 million (£410 million) on its increased $80 million (£56 million) budget.

By the time the third movie rolled around, the budget had increased to $103 million (£72 million), but the movie then only went on to make $362 million (£253 million).

It was also mercilessly panned by critics.

Despite box office takings of nearly $1.5 billion (£1.04 billion) for all three movies, there are currently no plans for a fourth.

Meanwhile, Galifianakis is starring as washed-up clown Chip Baskets in the FX comedy series ‘Baskets’.
