Zack Snyder explains why now was the right time for Rebel Moon

Netflix's Rebel Moon director Zack Snyder has explained how the space epic has finally come to screens.

The project started its life as a Star Wars movie when Disney first bought Lucasfilm in 2012, though Snyder ultimately decided it was better as its own original mythology, especially as it was an idea that had been in his head for decades.

Speaking to Digital Spy about why now is the right time for Rebel Moon to land, Snyder explained that it understandably took time to build out a unique universe that spans beyond a single movie.

"My team of people I work with normally, they're very world-build savvy," he told us. "They know how to put something together.

"I have all these amazing illustrators I work with just on a daily basis anyway. They've all gotten to stretch and really stretch their muscles. It's worked out perfectly. Everyone's trained up, and ready to do it. So it's good. "

Much like George Lucas before him, Snyder holds the immense mythology for this sci-fi world in his own mind — which was useful for cast members like Ed Skrein, who plays villainous Imperial military leader Atticus Noble.

"Anything we needed was inside Zack's head," he recalled. "It was like a mine of information... I'd say to him things like, 'What's the tattoo all about? What does this mean?' And he'd just have an amazing story that was idiosyncratic and just incredible. He is the man. He really is."

The first film in the series, A Child of Fire, sets the stage for a cataclysmic war in the stars in future chapters, with Snyder's Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver set to arrive next year.

"Basically, what we did was, at the end of Movie One, that action set-piece had always been there. We just scaled it a bit when we decided to break the movies in half. And so you had something that felt like a slightly satisfying ending to Movie One," Snyder said.

"But Movie Two is really a war movie, you know? If Movie One is gathering the team, then Movie Two is a war film. They're really fun for me because both of them have different challenges. It's exciting to do.

"You can imagine if you were like, 'Oh, we're going to make a big, long movie, and break it in half' – you might feel like it's the same tone, but with a break. But this, the DNA is very different."

Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire is in select cinemas from December 15 and is released on Netflix on December 22.
