Army of the Dead director Zack Snyder has revealed the title of its upcoming sequel: Planet of the Dead.

Released in May 2021, the action-packed horror centres on a group of mercenaries who break quarantine to venture into an infested Las Vegas and crack a casino safe containing $250 million in an attempt to pull off the greatest heist ever.

But, as you might expect, the mission proves more difficult than the ragtag team bargained for and what started out as a challenging but doable task quickly becomes a race against to get out with the money and their lives.

A prequel, entitled Army of Thieves, releases on Netflix tomorrow (October 29) and centres on Matthias Schweighöfer's safecracker Ludwig Dieter. Guz Khan, Stuart Martin, Jonathan Cohen, Ruby O Fee, Noemie Nakai, Peter Simonischek and Game of Thrones' Nathalie Emmanuel will also feature.

When asked whether the growing franchise would ever explore what happened to Dieter between the events of Army of Thieves and Army of the Dead during an interview with Inverse, Snyder teased that the seemingly ill-fated locksmith – who shut himself, and the king of the zombies, out of the vault so that his pal Vanderohe would survive – may have made it out after all.

"The real adventure would be to see what happened to him when that safe door closed. Did he get killed by Zeus or not? What happened? We don't see him die on camera, and there's still some time left," the filmmaker pointed out.

"I won't tell you what happens in Army of the Dead 2 – aka Planet of the Dead – but let's just say that there's a chance Dieter survives. And there's a chance that brush with death would have caused him to want to find a jailed Gwendoline [Emmanuel's character in Army of Thieves]."

Army of the Dead also stars Guardians of the Galaxy's Dave Bautista, Power's Ana de la Reguera and Omari Hardwick, Theo Rossi (Sons of Anarchy), comedian Tig Notaro, Ella Purnell (Belgravia), Westworld's Hiroyuki Sanada and Garret Dillahunt (Fear the Walking Dead).

Army of the Dead is available to stream on Netflix now.
