Zack Snyder: Why Isn’t Star Wars: The Force Awakens Criticised For Killing Billions More Than Man Of Steel?

One of the main grievances that audiences had with ‘Man Of Steel’ was the amount of destruction and death that took place in its final act when Superman and General Zod turned Metropolis into their own personal wrestling ring.

‘Man Of Steel’ director Zack Snyder has heard those complaints, and believes that they are unfounded. Especially when it’s compared to the amount of people that perished in ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’.

Speaking to the Wall Street Journal ahead of ‘Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice’s’ impending release Zack Snyder explained how he was recently confronted about the level of collateral damage in ‘Man Of Steel’, with the individual insisting that he’d never seen such a high level in a recent film.

This led Snyder to respond with, “I went, ‘Really?’ And I said, ‘Well, what about [’Star Wars: The Force Awakens’]?’ In ‘Star Wars’, they destroy five planets with billions of people on them. That’s gotta be one of the highest death toll movies in history, the new ‘Star Wars’ movie, if you do the math.”

You can’t really argue with Zack Snyder’s logic. The Starkiller Base does obliterate several planets in ‘The Force Awakens’.

However, J.J. Abrams made sure to only show us a few people on one of the planets about to die, while Zack Snyder more intimately showed Superman punching General Zod through buildings and almost certainly killing dozens in a horrific way.

Rather than the amount of people that died that’s what most moviegoers and Superman fans had a problem with while watching ‘Man Of Steel’. Especially since it was Superman that was doing the killing.

We’ll get to see if Zack Snyder has learnt from the error of his ways when ‘Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice’ is finally released on Friday.
