Columbian pop star Shakira has joined the cast of Disney’s ‘Zootropolis’, after she made the announcement at D23 Expo.

Not only will she feature as a member of the voice cast, she will contribute to the film’s soundtrack, too.

The singer tweeted an image of the character she’ll play - a gazelle named, ahem, Gazelle, and Disney have done a spot on job of anthropomorphising the recognisible celeb into an animal cartoon character.

It’s not clear how big Shakira’s role will be in the movie, but the film itself is one Disney fans should be getting excited about.

Firstly, the original, worldwide title of the film is ‘Zootopia’, but is known as ‘Zootropolis’ here in the UK. Apparently it’s so the UK have a unique title that works for our audience, but it sounds like there’s some hidden (and possibly legal) dispute preventing them for using it.

The film is based in an animal city and focuses on a cunning, scam artist fox named Nick Wilde who’s on the run. He teams up with a straight-and-narrow bunny law enforcer by the name of Judy Hopps, after the pair become embroiled in a conspiracy that frames the former for a crime he didn’t commit. While in reality the pair would be natural enemies, they become friends (as per the classic Disney formula) as their adventure unravels.

The footage we’ve seen thus far - an amusing, nicely animated teaser - is an indicator as to what directors Byron Howard (’Bolt’, ‘Tangled’), Rich Moore (’Wreck-It Ralph’), and co-director Jared Bush (who’s also the film’s writer) will have in store for fans.

Jason Bateman and Ginnifer Goodwin voice Nick and Judy, respectively. So far the only other actor linked is Alan Tudyk, with his role currently unspecified.

‘Zootropolis’ is in UK cinemas on 25 March, 2016.
