Jessica Chastain to play Princess Diana in new film?

Tree of Life star attached to biopic that shows Princess as a 'damaged person'

Jessica Chastain is attached to play Princess Diana in a new film detailing the affair she had with Dr. Hasnat Kahn, according to reports coming out of the American Film Market.

If made, ‘Caught in Flight’ will be directed by ‘Downfall’’s Oliver Hirschbiegel, and will go into pre-production in March 2012 for Ecosse Films, before production takes the cast and crew to Pakistan, Angola, and Paris. The budget is said to be £9million.

The project was amongst 415 films pitched at the American Film Market in Santa Monica this week, though the talent involved and subject matter have made it a hot ticket for investors.

Steven Jeffreys (‘The Libertine’) wrote the script, in which the Princess is “not cast in a particularly favourable light”. According to Thompson On Hollywood she’s a "damaged person" and stalks the doctor after he ends their affair.

It is described as a “love story between a princess locked in a tower and an ordinary man”.

The casting of critically acclaimed Chastain is interesting, though her resemblance to Diana is not overly apparent.

The actress shot to prominence after starring opposite Brad Pitt in 'The Tree of Life', which won the top prize at the Cannes Film Festival. She was recommended for the role by Al Pacino.

She went on to nab roles in the awards favourite 'The Help', as well as the upcoming 'Coriolanus' and 'Texas Killing Fields' and she is seen as one of Hollywood's rising stars.

Reaction to an American playing the Princess may not be favourable however, especially after the outcry over American Meryl Streep playing Margaret Thatcher (in the upcoming 'The Iron Lady').

Hirschbiegel's most famous film, 'Downfall', showed Hitler's final days in his bunker. He also directed 'The Invasion' and 'Five Minutes of Heaven'.

At one point, Pathé were looking at making a project about Diana starring Keira Knightley, though nothing has been heard on that since last year.
