Several actors were surprisingly omitted from the In Memoriam section at the 2014 BAFTAs, including James Gandolfini, Roger Lloyd Pack and Richard Griffiths.

The section, which paid tribute to Hollywood and British film talent from behind and in front of camera, highlighted the sad passing of (amongst others) Paul Walker, Joan Fontaine and Philip Seymour Hoffman this year.

But Gandolfini, who died of a heart attack in June 2013, was not included in the list. Most famous for ‘The Sopranos’, he also starred in dozens of films including ‘True Romance’ and ‘The Man Who Wasn’t There’.

Neither was ‘Only Fools and Horses’ star Roger Lloyd Pack, who appeared in the ‘Harry Potter’ franchise, ‘Tinker, Tailor Soldier Spy’ and many more before he died of pancreatic cancer in January.

Fellow ‘Harry Potter’ alumni Richard Griffiths was also omitted. He played Vernon Dursley in the series, but is most famous for playing Uncle Monty in the cult classic ‘Withnail and I’. He died in March 2013.

The Telegraph film section and TV critic Ian Hyland were amongst the many tweeters to share their bemusement on the social network.

Perhaps the prominent TV roles of the trio counted against them (it was the Film BAFTAs after all), but all three also had long and distinguished film careers.

Traditionally it’s the Oscars who accidently snub prominent dead stars in the In Memoriam segment. Larry Hagman, Corey Haim and even ‘Jaws’ actor Roy Scheider have all been cut from the reel in recent years (though the latter was included a year later).

To counter this sort of controversy, since 2013 the Academy now post a supplementary online gallery of deceased stars to cover its bases.
