BAFTAs 2014: the complete list of winners

Gravity nabs 6 awards but slavery epic 12 Years a Slave scoops top prize.

The awards were spread around at the 2014 BAFTAs, with ‘Gravity’ and ‘12 Years a Slave’ landing the big prizes.

‘Gravity’ caused an early shock of sorts when it nabbed the ‘Outstanding British Film’ award. Its inclusion in the category – with its Mexican director and American stars and studio – has proven controversial but we think it makes perfect sense.

The Sandra Bullock-starring space disaster flick picked up several more technical awards, including best cinematography and special effects.

One of the most deserving awards of the night was Best Supporting Actor, won by previously unknown American-Somali Barkhad Abdi, for his riveting and tragic turn in ‘Captain Philips’.

Serial awards-magnet Jenifer Lawrence won the female equivalent for ‘American hustle’, though she wasn’t there to pick up the award.

One less predictable winner was Alan Partridge star Steve Coogan, who won the Best Adapted Screenplay gong, alongside Jeff Pope, for the ‘Philomena’ Screenplay.

A clearly emotional Will Poulter picked up the rising star award. The ‘Son of Rambow’ star even managed to sneak in a ‘Finding Nemo’ reference into his heartfelt speech.

‘12 Years a Slave’ was the big pre-show favourite, but was relatively ignored until Chiwetel Ejiofor won a deserved Best Actor prize. Would this help shift momentum towards the slavery epic in the race for Best Film?

It seemed not when ‘Gravity’ was awarded yet again for Best director. It was the sixth, but ultimately final trophy for Alfonso Cuaron’s movie - because ’12 Years a Slave’ triumphed in the final, prestigious category. It is surely now the favorite to win Best Film at the Oscars as well.

Proceedings concluded with a well-deserved BAFTA Fellowship award for Dame Helen Mirren, who has done perhaps more than any other actress to make British cinema popular around the world.
