Superman: Man of Steel trailer premiere

While promoting 'The Dark Knight Rises', director Christopher Nolan told Yahoo! Movies that new Superman film 'Man of Steel' was "the future of the superhero genre".

He would say that of course, as he's producing it. But, judging by this exclusive first trailer, you can see what he's getting at.

Watch it below.

Visually astonishing, it sees British thesp Henry Cavill don the iconic cape in this entirely rebooted Superman adventure. Russell Crowe plays his Dad, Jor El, and Michael Shannon is villain General Zod.

Most intriguing however is the choice of director. Snyder has one of the most recognisable visual styles in Hollywood, as seen in the highly stylised and meticulous compositions in '300', 'Sucker Punch' and 'Dawn of the Dead'. He also did a decent job of adapting the notoriously complex 'Watchmen' for the big screen.

He certainly impressed die-hard fans at this year's Comic-Con in San Diego. Similar 'Man of Steel' footage to what you're seeing above had many geeks in tears. One described himself as a "blubbering mess" after the screening. Another said: "Any doubt I had was gone with that trailer."

Snyder himself said that they rebuilt superman totally from scratch, ignoring the previous films and even John Williams' iconic score. He said: "We had to act as if no film has been made. When we approached it, we had to say 'this is Superman for the first time'.

"It's about making him work and making him cool."

'Man of Steel' is released June 14 2013. We'd love to hear your thoughts on the trailer in the comments section below.
