Braveheart: the TV series

Mel Gibson’s historical epic lined up for ‘in-depth’ TV remake

Mel Gibson’s Oscar-winning epic ‘Braveheart’ is the latest movie being lined up for a TV remake.

Given the success of medieval-themed fantasy 'Game of Thrones' and historical drama 'Spartacus', it's no surprise that TV channels are looking for similar properties, and perhaps they've found a ready-made successor in the form of Gibson's William Wallace biopic.

The Hollywood Reporter claims that STV Productions are developing a potential series which will focus on the back story of Wallace and will also include his battles with Edward Longshanks and Robert the Bruce.

Mick Davis is working on the new show, from ideas by Kent Dalian and Seoras Wallace, who also worked on the award winner in 1995. The series will possibly be called 'Wallace'.

The film was a huge success, but drew some criticism for playing fast and loose with historical facts. Some of the clangers historians picked up on included; William Wallace being a commoner - he was actually a nobleman; Wallace and Edward I dying at the same time - they didn't; and the fact the Scots wore kilts, which is apparently inaccurate.

However, STV director of content Alan Clements said that the film will stick closer to historical reality this time around, with more "depth" promised.

He said: “We plan to delve deep into his character and explore his passions, bringing parts of history to life in a spectacular and raw depiction. With all eyes on Scotland in the current political climate, this also seems to be a very appropriate time to tell this story in more depth.”

The show doesn't have a network yet, but will be shopped around next month.

This might just be speculation on our part, but what chance a cameo from Mel Gibson himself? Big Hollywood stars are turning up on TV all the time now, and Gibson could do with a career boost anyway.
