Most pointless movie remake named
'Dirty Dancing', 'Planet of the Apes', 'Total Recall', 'The Thing' - all classic films universally loved by film-goers. Despite this, Hollywood has either remade them already, or plans to in the near future.
Just this week we heard that 'Scarface' was the latest fan favourite set for the reboot treatment.
The idea of classics being regurgitated gets under the skin of most movie lovers and readers of Yahoo! Movies are no different. More than 70,000 of you voted in our poll to find the most unnecessary remake around.
With 32 per cent of the vote, 'Dirty Dancing' was the film you most wanted protected from the idea-vacuum that is (occasionally) Hollywood.
However a remake of the Swayze-starring flick is indeed on the way and tentatively slated for a 2013 release.
In second place is the universally panned Tim Burton remake of 'Charlie and Chocolate Factory', a film Johnny Depp's career miraculously survived.
Rounding off the top three is the Nicolas Cage-starring 'Wicker Man', a film so bad it occasionally borders on hilarious.
Even though critics usually hate remakes - and they rarely do great box at the office - studios still look to the past for a potential quick buck.
Our poll also included 'The Stepford Wives', 'Psycho', 'Evil Dead' and another Tim Burton travesty, the 2001 version of 'Planet of the Apes'. Each received several thousand votes.
There's also a trend of remakes becoming prequels in recent times, as well as new films taking heavy inspiration from existing classics.
Another crack at a 'Judge Dredd' film is heading our way after Sylvester Stallone's failed attempt nearly 16 years ago. In a similar vein 'Robocop' is also getting a reboot.
In a few weeks 'The Thing' comes to cinemas; a prequel/remake of John Carpenter's cult classic of the same name. 'Superman' is getting another big screen outing too after the relative failure of the 2006 film, itself an attempt to cash-in on the success of the first Christopher Reeve picture.
Whatever your opinions on remakes, they're not going away. Films are big business and with each one seen as a risky venture, the film industry is less likely to take risks than it used to be.
So do you agree with the winner (or should that be loser) of our poll? What films do you think Hollywood should stay well away from? Let us know in the comments section below.
