Director Tony Scott found dead after apparent suicide

Man behind Top Gun, True Romance and Man on Fire said to have jumped off bridge in San Pedro

Director Tony Scott has died after allegedly committing suicide on Sunday.

The 68 year old’s body was found after he jumped off the Vincent Thomas Bridge in San Pedro, California.

Contact information found inside Tony Scott’s car, which he had parked on the bridge, led authorities to his office where they found a suicide note, the Los Angeles Times reports.

The Daily Breeze, who first released the news, reported that Scott climbed a fence on the bridge’s south side and jumped off ‘without hesitation’ at about 12.30pm.

Scott’s body was found by a dive team at around 4.30pm after port police, the LAPD, California Highway Patrol, the Coastguard and city firefighters conducted a search.

Sonar equipment had to be used to track the director’s body in the port’s murky waters.

Tony Scott, who ran Scott Free productions with his brother three-time Oscar nominated Ridley Scott, worked on many Hollywood blockbusters during his life.

Perhaps best known for directing ‘Top Gun’, the British film director also worked on ‘Days Of Thunder’, ‘Enemy Of The State’, ‘The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3’ and ‘True Romance’ to name but a few.

More recently he had co-produced this year’s ‘Prometheus’ and was an executive producer on ‘The Grey’ and ‘Stoker’.

According to a representative from the coroner’s department the director’s death is now being treated as a ‘suicide investigation’.

Tony Scott is survived by his wife Donna W. Scott and two children.
