First poster of Idris Elba as Nelson Mandela

Luther and Thor star will play the former president of South Africa

The first poster for Nelson Mandela biopic 'Long Walk To Freedom' has been unveiled.

Star of 'The Wire' and the forthcoming Guillermo Del Toro monster blockbuster 'Pacific Rim' Idris Elba will be playing the revolutionary and former President of South Africa.

The poster is inspired by the artwork designed by the United Nations Centre Against Apartheid, Liberation Support Movement, which produced the famous 'Free Nelson Mandela' campaign art in 1981.

Elba will play Mandela opposite Naomie Harris, who is taking the role of his wife Winnie.

The project, based on his best-selling autobiography of the same name, is being directed by Justin Chadwick, who helmed 'The Other Boleyn Girl'.

It will follow Mandela's life through his childhood, his revolutionary period, his imprisonment and then his election to the presidency.

The script has been penned by William Nicholson, who adapted Tom Hooper's award-winning 'Les Miserables' for the screen.

Elba follows the likes of Morgan Freeman, Terrence Howard, David Harewood, Elba's fellow 'Wire' star Clarke Peters, Dennis Haysbert, Danny Glover and Sidney Poitier in playing Mandela on screen.
