Cult video game ‘Gears Of War’ is reportedly closer than ever to a film adaptation, with ‘Ted’ and ‘Identity Thief’ producer Scott Stuber now on board.

According to Variety, Stuber has taken on the task of producing the third-person shooter adaptation, and will begin developing a script with the game creators Epic Games.

This follows an attempt by New Line Cinema to adapt the game in 2007 that fell apart due to “creative differences”.

Although better known for his comedies (including ‘Role Models’ and ‘Your Highness’), Stuber produced ‘Safe House’, board game adapt ‘Battleship’  and has Samurai action ’47 Ronin’ marching on cinemas this Summer. So he’s got some action credentials to help tackle the Locust Horde.

Released on Xbox 360 in 2006, ‘Gears Of War’ follows Delta Squad, led by the war-hardened vet Marcus Fenix, who mount a last ditch attempt to save humanity from an unforgiving underground enemy – the Locusts.

Followed by two sequels, in 2008 and 2011, the ‘Gears Of War’ franchise has notched up almost 19 million sales, and stands the second most successful Xbox series in history, just behind ‘Halo’.
